Blue Suede Ambassador Volunteer Program

Objective:

MEM Blue Suede VolunteersProvide accurate and courteous information and directions to passengers and the general public visiting Memphis International Airport; provide information about the Airport’s facilities, amenities, and services. Provide directions/escort to various areas of the airport.

General Qualifications:

A commitment to support the mission of the Blue Suede Volunteer Program and the MEM Airport.                                                             

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Pass an FBI screening and qualify for an airport security badge
  • Be able to communicate effectively
  • Comply with all airport regulations and volunteer duties
  • Be friendly, outgoing, and able to initiate conversations with customers
  • Be able to stand for part or all of the shift
  • Be reliable

Experience and Skills:

Having worked in an environment requiring face-to-face interaction and good “people skills” is important. Volunteers must be able to communicate verbally in clearly understandable English. Multilingual skills are not required, but the ability to speak other languages is a valuable asset. Volunteers must work cooperatively and courteously with diverse groups of people; be able to access multiple references in a timely manner in response to customer requests for information; demonstrate excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, and can respond calmly in emergency situations.

Hours of Operation:

The Airport is open 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week, including holidays. Volunteer positions are available anytime between 8 a.m.  and 6 p.m. each day, and positions are available outside of these hours if desired. Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of 8 hours each month and commit to a minimum of 1 year of service.

 Summary of Essential Duties:

  • Welcome visitors and project a positive and professional image.
  • Provide accurate and courteous assistance at information desks in baggage claim and ticketing areas regarding airport facilities, services, and amenities.
  • Access the Language Line to assist non-English speaking visitors.
  • Assist the Terminal Operations Coordinator and Operations management during irregular operations as requested.
  • Provide support for special events.
  • Ensure the Information Desk is stocked with relevant brochures, hotel information, etc.
  • Participate in orientation and initial/reoccurring training programs to stay knowledgeable on airport information and changes.

Uniform:

Blue Suede Ambassadors VestVolunteers are required to wear the all-season vest and badge, provided by Airport Authority, and business casual attire. Recommend comfortable walking shoes.
