  • Collaboration: We work together to address and resolve safety concerns.
  • Proactive Reporting: We encourage all employees and tenants to report safety issues, which are addressed collaboratively.
  • Continuous Improvement: We strive for ongoing enhancement of safety practices.
  • Transparent Communication: We share safety trends and progress within the airport community to foster a culture of open communication.

Through systematic management, training, and a confidential hazard reporting system, we aim to create a culture of safety-focused behavior. By integrating safety into all airport activities and working together, we are committed to continuous monitoring, proactive management, and a collaborative approach to achieving and maintaining high safety standards.

MEMSafe Safety Management System (SMS)

The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority is dedicated to operating Memphis International Airport in the safest practical manner.  As one of our ten Core Competencies, Safety is among the Authority’s highest priorities.  It is everyone’s responsibility and shall be integral to all airport activities.

A Safety Management System (SMS) is a systematic approach to managing safety, including all necessary organizational structures, accountabilities, statements, processes, and procedures.

SMS provides airport management with a set of tools to make safety related decisions. SMS also helps airport management identify safety risks associated with airport operations, development, and other changes to proactively address those issues before they result in accidents, incidents, injury, or damage. The SMS Confidential Reporting Program provides for uninhibited reporting of existing and potentially hazardous conditions and occurrences at MEM. With the participation of airport employees, accidents may be prevented. The overall safety environment of the airport can be improved while protecting the reporter’s confidentiality and thus eliminating any fear of retribution.

Confidential reports may be made by calling (901) 922-8339 or filling out the Hazard Reporting Form to submit a report online, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The identity of any employee providing safety information will be kept confidential to the extent permissible by law.
