New Heights – Kathy Graves Lee

Kathy Graves Lee

After over 45 years, Kathy Graves Lee is preparing for a well-deserved retirement from the airline industry and more than four decades with Delta Air Lines.

Kathy’s journey began in 1979 with Republic Airlines at Memphis International Airport. Since then, she has been an integral part of the mission to make every traveler’s experience “MEMorable.”

Kathy’s love for aviation and airplanes began in her childhood. Her father, Charles Graves, was a Navy veteran and worked in airfield maintenance for the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority (MSCAA). After 20 years in the military, Graves began his career at MSCAA and retired as the Director of Maintenance in 2000.

“I was a sophomore art student at the University of Memphis when my father suggested that I apply for a position at the airport. Kathy said, “I went for the interview and the rest is history.”

Kathy’s storied career has included working in every department such as aircraft cleaning, customer service, ramp operations, leadership development, administration, and finally as Station Manager for Delta Air Lines. As Station Manager, she is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Delta’s operations at Memphis International Airport that includes ensuring delivery of excellent customer service, working closely with her team, and ensuring adherence to company and airport policies and regulations. Additionally, she coordinates with various departments and external partners to maintain efficient operations. She credits her successful career with learning from others, humility, and curiosity towards continuous improvement.

Reflecting on her 45 years in the industry, Kathy is proud of the work she’s done. “It’s been a wonderful career,” she says. “I have had some great mentors including my father, who have influenced my leadership style of being kind, tough, and fair. I am passionate about people and believe that every person is critical to ensure a great experience for our travelers.”

Kathy recalls some of her favorite moments. “Every person has a story.  I have been able to hold hands with a 91-year-old woman as her brother’s remains were returned from Pearl Harbor. I helped reunite families for holidays and other special events. I helped connect cancer patients and their families to critical care at St. Jude. I also got to spend special moments with my dad as we worked in the same building for 20 years. And I have gotten to spend time and special occasions, and learn, from amazing people, especially my team, along the way” she said.

As Kathy prepares to retire, she reflects on what she’ll miss most—the culture. “The culture at the airport is rich, rare, and real. We all work together as one, helping each other every day,” said Kathy. Her connection with her team, airline partners, and travelers has been a key part of her memorable experience at Delta and Memphis International Airport.

Her next chapter includes spending more time with family and friends, indulging in her favorite hobbies and traveling.  “I’m looking forward to spending more time with my daughter, mother, loved ones, and friends,” she says. “I want to travel more and now I have time to restore antique furniture, garden, paint, and volunteer to give back to my community.”
