Memphis, Tenn. – Memphis Shelby County Airport Authority (MSCAA) hosted an official renaming and dedication ceremony on August 11 to commemorate the renaming of Memphis International Airport to Frederick W. Smith International Airport.
The event drew over 200 attendees, including civic leaders, business executives, and members of Fred Smith’s family. It featured the official reveal of the new airport logo, architectural renderings of a future monument, and commemorative speeches highlighting Mr. Smith as a tireless champion of Memphis, dedicated philanthropist, and a global leader whose efforts transformed the world.
“Today, we immortalize a true visionary who reshaped the logistics industry and elevated our city’s footprint on the global stage,” said Terry Blue, President and CEO of Memphis Shelby County Airport Authority. “As passengers travel through Frederick W. Smith International Airport, we want them to be reminded of the relentless drive, innovation, and community spirit that Fred Smith championed throughout his life.”
A resolution was presented to the Smith family on behalf of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority Board Commissioners officially announcing the renaming to Frederick W. Smith International Airport. Additionally, a FedEx 777 aircraft landed in the FedEx World Hub located in the Frederick W. Smith International Airport for the first time. The jet carries FedEx’s vintage design, and aligned with the company’s tradition of naming jets after team members’ children, it is named after Smith’s granddaughter, Rosie.
Logistics and Operational Details
While the official name, brand, and logo will take effect on August 11, the physical and technical rebranding of the airport will occur in phases to ensure daily operations and air travel continue without interruption.
- Airport Codes: Travelers and stakeholders should note that the airport’s three-letter IATA code, MEM, will remain unchanged.
- Signage & Terminals: Crews will begin updating exterior and interior terminal signage immediately.
- Passenger Information: All flights, check-ins, and baggage claims will be processed as scheduled.
