More than 1,200 runners and walkers traded boarding passes for running bibs and took to the runway on September 19, 2026, for the 2nd Annual MEM Runway 5K at the newly renamed Frederick W. Smith International Airport (MEM), raising $130,000 to benefit the Airport’s Community Foundation.

The unique event gave participants the rare opportunity to run on an actual airport runway, offering a completely flat, fast course with up-close views of parked aircraft and airport operations. There are only 11 airports out of the 525 commercial airports in the United States that do a race like this.

Proceeds from this year’s registration fees and sponsorships will directly support the Airport’s Community Foundation, a 501(C)3 nonprofit organization, who focuses on civic engagement, education, sustainability efforts, health, and community-supporting initiatives.

“We are absolutely thrilled by the incredible turnout for this year’s Runway 5K,” said Terry Blue, President and CEO of Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. “It’s not every day you get to run down a major runway, and seeing our local community come together to support our community foundation while experiencing the airport from a whole new perspective was truly special. We want to thank our volunteers, sponsors, and participants for making this event successful.”

Following the race, participants and their families enjoyed a post-race festival featuring a live DJ, free food, and a raffle where participants had a chance to win prizes that included a pair of round-trip tickets from Breeze Airways, a one night stay at the Memphian Hotel, and exclusive swag items from the Airport.
